What is this presentation about?

When it comes to sustainability in construction, alternative and eco-friendly materials often take center stage — and for good reason: the construction sector accounts for roughly 40% of all CO₂ emissions. It’s clear that the way we currently build cannot be sustained over the long term.
But if we want to build more sustainably, there are many other issues — some even more critical — that we also need to tackle. This presentation offers a brief introduction to this complex and far-reaching topic.

The presentation explores a range of alternative building methods — like rammed earth, SuperAdobe, and using plastic bottles — discussing both their benefits and limitations. In addition, the presentation highlights a range of other issues and challenges related to sustainability — including WASH, maintenance, scalability, community acceptance, the lack of local experts (such as architects), and many more.
